CAMPUS CONFLICT TIP OF THE MONTH
The "Triple A" Approach to Responding to Criticism
|
We are all subjected to criticisms on occasion, and as students we may be even more susceptible, as we are regularly receive feedback from professors, advisors, and even classmates. Here are some ways to best handle criticism:
|
Step One: Acknowledge
- Verbal or non-verbal "I hear you"
- Convey willingness to discuss the concern
Step Two: Ask for More
- Request more information
- Listen
- Try to understand the other's point of view
Step Three: Add Your Own
- Ask permission to share your comments
- Offer your point of view
- If an apology is in order, offer one sincerely
- Talk about what can be done to remedy the situation
