Civilian peacekeepers certainly preceded 9/11; however, the number of governmental and non-governmental organizations engaged in peacekeeping continues to expand, and with this, the number of people pursuing peacekeeping career options has grown.
One of the biggest hurdles is not recruiting, but adequate training. The concept of professional peace-mission training for civilians is relatively new; on-the-job training was the way most civilians started their careers. In fact, there are still only five residential two-week intensive civilian peacekeeper training institutes in the world, with the Austrians establishing the first in 1994. None, however, are in the U.S.
The Civilian Peacekeeper Training Institute at UND’s Conflict Resolution Center could be the first training institute of its kind in the nation. Your help will make this institute a reality.
